PHOENIX -- Inside a small computer store in north Phoenix they have big plans; getting computers to military members serving overseas and their families here at home.
"I've been there and I know how important it is to stay in touch," says Philip Spry who started the
Computers for Soldiers program after a conversation with a military buddy.
"I just asked him how can I help?"
And that's all it took.
Spry served in Desert storm and still wears his combat boots nearly every day to work.
His expertise is computers. He and his employees buy used computers at auctions, fix them, then sell them to military members and their families for $200 each.
Everything the computer user needs, including a webcam so soldiers and families can see each other.
"This is not about making money this is about keeping people connected," Spry says.
He says the $200 covers the cost of the parts. Their time is donated and what started as just a few computers has grown into the hundreds.
They work with the group
Packages from Home to get the computers overseas.
"We don't want money, I wouldn't know what to do with it," Spry says.
In fact the program is hoping to help more military families.
The computers, that's the easy part.
