PHOENIX -- A 62-year-old woman who was killed after being hit by as many as three cars on a north Phoenix road Wednesday evening has been identified.

Police say Gale Whitney was crossing eastbound on Cave Creek Road near Thunderbird Road at 6:30 p.m. when she was initially struck.

According to Phoenix Police Department spokesperson Tommy Thompson, the driver hit the brakes and stopped, but fled the scene going southbound on Cave Creek Road.

"Had they stayed there this would have been an accident, it might not have saved this person's life but it would have been a simple thing that was compounded just because that person chose to run," Thompson said Thursday.

Police said the woman was run over by as many as two other vehicles.

"When people choose to cross in the middle of a street they're taking their lives into their owns hands, many time when they think that someone must be able to see them that's not the case," Thompson said.

He said one of the secondary vehicles stopped and waited for officers to arrive, but the other also fled the scene.

Police are asking for help locating the two drivers that fled the scene.

According to Thompson the vehicle that first hit the woman was described as a two-toned, 90s model Nissan Altima or Maxima that sustained significant front-end damage and may have a broken windshield.

Police said they are also looking for a light-colored vehicle that also fled after hitting the woman.

Anyone who may have seen this incident or has any information is asked to call the Phoenix Police at 602-262-6151 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
