PHOENIX -- It's becoming more common for women to be the main bread winner in the family.
"Oh I'm very thankful," said Maria Holmes.
Holmes is thankful for the $2,000 she got from
Soroptimist International.
"Soroptimists in Greek means for women," said Judy Register with Soroptimists.
Every year, the group gives a grant to help with school expenses for deserving women.
"The woman's opportunity award is to help those women who find themselves financially the head of household are trying to get their education," said Register.
Women at the head of households is becoming more common. Reports show 1 in 10 men can expect to be unemployed by the end of this year, leaving women to pick up the slack.
"They are trying to be the best they can be," said Register.
In Holmes's case, she attends 9 hours at A.S.U. and works full time, but that's not it.
"It is a lot, it keeps me busy but I have 5 kids so they keep me busy as well," said Holmes.
It's those kids that serve as inspiration for her to go back to school.
"I wanted to be able to complete my bachelors degree to show them that it is possible no matter what thing you take on," said Holmes.
She says she couldn't have done it without Soroptimists' help.
"I think she's an inspiration to women all over," said Register.
Applications for next years award are due by December 1st.
