The new president of the Arizona Board of Regents is calling for a fourth state university.
Phoenix attorney Ernest Calderon told the Phoenix Business Journal the school would be more affordable to students because it wouldn't have a football team, marching band or research program.
The school would be a purely instructional university, and be more affordable than the three existing state universities.
Calderon's idea is to compile an action list by December to present to the Arizona Legislature.
The 12-member Arizona Board of Regents oversees the three state universities: Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University and the University of Arizona.
Members of the board are appointed by the governor and serve eight-year terms.
A native of the small Arizona mining town of Morenci and an alumnus of Northern Arizona University, Calderon has served as vice president of the regents for the past two years.
He also is a graduate of the University of Arizona College of Law and former president of the State Bar of Arizona.
He has served seven Arizona governors by appointment.
