PHOENIX -- More than 57,000 unemployed Arizonans will receive letters next week that they will be happy to read.
Steve Meissner, with the Arizona Department of Economic Security, said the letters will inform the unemployed that they may be eligible for additional weeks of compensation.
"That's good news for thousands of the unemployed," said Meissner, "It's even better news for about 8 thousand of these people that have already used up their benefits and now they're eligible for extra unemployment. They're getting nothing right now....and they'll be able to start getting payments pretty soon."
The Emergency Unemployment Compensation was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Obama in early November.
But not everyone is eligible to receive the extra weeks of payments.
"It's going to be fairly complicated because there have been different extensions and the rules for the extensions vary quite a bit. It also will depend on the number of weeks you worked and when you worked them," said Meissner.
In the letter, anyone who is eligible for the additional unemployment payments is being asked to continue filing weekly claims starting at 12a.m. on Sunday, November 15.
