PHOENIX -- Sheriff Joe Arpaio fired back at one of his most outspoken critics on Wednesday.
In a letter dated June 3, he told the Reverend Al Sharpton he refuses to step down from his post.
Arpaio also wrote, "This is about you making self-serving, grandiose pronouncements, making outrageous statements at meaningless press conferences. I'm not abandoning my promise to the people to enforce the State and Federal immigration laws and protect this community."
Sharpton had recently called for the Sheriff's resignation in light of his controversial immigration policy.
"He put a word out that if I don't resign by June 1, he's coming down here with all his demonstrators," Arpaio said. "I just wanted to let him know I am not resigning. If you want to come, come on down. We have nothing to hide."
Arpaio said he welcomes Sharpton to tour his facilities and see first hand how he operates his programs.
There's no word yet on whether Sharpton will be visiting the Valley.
