"I tell people I don't look for the money, but after finding money every day for over 26 years people don't believe me," Davidson said.
Davidson beefs up his savings account by picking up what others leave behind. On the busy roads of Phoenix, those little discoveries can add up to big incentives. In his running career, he’s earned about $8,406.
“It's a good part time job then,” said Davidson.
He even saved up enough spare change to take his wife to Hawaii for their anniversary in 1991.
But it's not easy work. An average workout for Davidson is about ten miles. He’s run with a broken kneecap, cracked ribs, and a torn hip flux -- but he says it's all worth it.
“The last day I didn't find money was 1983,” he said.
He also picks up soda can tops and empty cigarette boxes to redeem them for gifts.
“Our satellite dish is from Marlboro, our VCR is from Camel, our DVD player is from Newport,” he said.
Even though Davidson’s efforts have helped his wallet, he says it's not about the money. To him, it's about the open road.
“It's like Forest Gump -- you're out there, and I just run because I like running,” he said.
Tomorrow starts a new workout, and for Davidson, a new payday.
