PHOENIX – An officer accidentally shot himself at a police academy in Phoenix on Monday, police said.

Detective James Holmes with the Phoenix Police Department said an officer accidentally discharged a round while holstering his service weapon at the Arizona Law Enforcement Academy.

The officer reportedly received a gunshot wound to the ankle, a non-life threatening injury, and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Holmes said the training was conducted in a controlled, academy environment and no other person(s) were injured.

He also said the incident is being investigated to determine the cause and to prevent future episodes.

The officer has been released from the hospital.
