PHOENIX -- Monique Machiz and her dad are big women’s basketball fans. They couldn’t believe it when they heard the news -- Diana Taurasi, cited for DUI.
“She is a figure that I look up to so it was really disappointing to hear that,” said Monique.
Her Dad, Ives was also taken back.
“Diana is at the top of her game, she’s a superstar on the WNBA, so I think people do have a higher level of expectation for her.”
For Monique who’s been plaing basketball since she was seven and will play in college this fall, Diana’s not just another pro athelete.
“Diana Taurasi is somebody, I’ve actually met her a couple times and I see her as an incredible, not only athlete, but human being as well,” said Monique.
She was shocked to hear that the Phoenix Police say Taurasi was speeding and failing to stay in one lane near 7th Avenue and Camelback Road at 2:30 Thursday morning.
Police say after field sobriety tests she was driven to a mobile DUI unit, where blood was drawn and she was cited and released.
Monique and her Dad say they still hope the allegations aren’t true.
But if they are...
“She’s still human and everybody does make mistakes."
The family hopes if she is convicted, she takes responsibility and doesn’t make the same mistake again.
