More layoffs hit Arizona Republic, including 20 in newsroom

Reported by: Associated Press
Last Update: 7/10 6:42 am
PHOENIX -- The Arizona Republic made another round of layoffs Thursday as part of Gannett Co.'s overall cut of 1,400 jobs at its newspapers.

In a note to employees obtained by The Associated Press, Republic publisher John Zidich said 100 positions were cut because of the ongoing weak economy.

A memo to staff from editor Randy Lovely says 20 newsroom employees were laid off.

Neither Zidich nor Lovely returned calls from the AP seeking comment.

The layoffs follow a work force cut of 10 percent at Gannett in 2008, which left the McLean, Va.-based company with about 41,500 employees.

Gannett publishes USA Today, the largest newspaper by circulation in the U.S., along with 80 other daily newspapers. Gannett closed the print edition of the Tucson Citizen in May.
