PHOENIX – Several residents escaped a blaze that caused major damage at a West Valley apartment complex early Monday.
Captain Jackson Maldonado with the Phoenix Fire Department said a lamp fell onto a mattress inside an apartment unit causing the fire to ignite around 2 a.m. near 53rd Avenue and McDowell Road.
More than two dozen firefighters battled the flames, which spread to other units.
“We were able to get the fire under control relatively quickly and get everyone out of the adjoining apartments who were still asleep at the time,” said Maldonado.
The fire damaged four apartments, destroying two of them.
No one was injured.
