PHOENIX -- In backyards across the Valley, you'll find millions of pounds of fruit.

But every year, oranges, pomegranates, lemons and grapefruit end up wasted, when they could benefit the less fortunate.

Many people think food banks like St. Mary's just accept canned food.

In reality, St. Mary's take fruits and vegetables from backyard gardens or citrus trees.

Last harvest season alone, St. Mary's Food Bank collected two million pounds of homegrown produce.

"Maybe you have five orange trees in your backyard and you only use half a tree for what your family needs, there's a lot of people out there who could use the citrus and put it to good use," said Jerry Brown, spokesperson for St. Mary's food bank.

For just $10, a group of volunteers from St. Mary's will come to your house to harvest your fruits or vegetables for you.
