PHOENIX -- The former central Phoenix home of Arizona Senator John McCain will go up for auction today.
Bidding for the home near Central and Glendale avenues will start at $5.9 million, according to
Higgenbotham Auctioneers, International.
The
home, on over 2 acres, is appraised at more than $12 million.
It has 13 bedrooms, 14.5 baths, two guest homes, a Mediterranean resort style pool and spa area, seven car air-conditioned garage and 10 fireplaces, according to the auction company.
The home was bought in 1951 by the parents of McCain's wife, Cindy; the McCains lived there for more than 20 years.
The McCains sold the home to an investor in 2006 for $3.2 million in what Cindy called a "bittersweet decision." The buyer began a multi-million dollar renovation, changing the feel of the home from southwest decor to a Mediterranean villa, according to the auction company.
Several McCain touches are left over in the renovated home, according to the company.
A concrete slab near a front entrance of the house shows where the McCains wrote their names in the wet concrete.
The names of their two children Meghan and Jack are there, as well as a series of tiny hand and footprints.
The items from two guest homes as well as exterior furnishings and statuary went up for auction on Friday, while the main home furnishings were offered beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday.
The home itself goes up for auction beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
The auction will be held live at the home, along with Internet bidding.
