The Special Hands Car Wash at 11 th Street and Indian School Road in central Phoenix is one you may have missed, but when you go you will never forget.
At first glance it looks like a normal car wash with the soapy suds, the splash of water and the hard working crews washing away the dust and dirt.
But this car wash comes with a special touch.
It's different because all of the employees are mentally disabled in one way or another, from cerebral palsy to Down syndrome, and manage to work hard while keeping a smile on their faces.
“I love working here,” said Hank Pruitt who’s worked here for 16 years. “These guys are my friends.”
The car wash, run by the Tungland Corporation, has all the services, washing, drying, detailing and even waxing. The prices are good, too. It is $5.95 for a regular wash and $10.95 for the works.
“Customers love the connection with the guys who work here,” said Michael Coats who runs the wash with enthusiasm and tough love. “These guys may move a little slower but they’re just dealing with issues like all of us deal with issues. That’s it.”
The sound of music comes from a radio at the front door and it’s not uncommon to see one of the workers break out in a dance.
By the time you leave your car, truck, or SUV will be clean inside and out, top to bottom, and you may have made a few new friends along the way.
The car wash is open Monday through Saturday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
