The Phoenix Business Journal is reporting that Arizona Cardinals President Michael Bidwill is backing business tax breaks to attract solar energy investments and production to the state.

Bidwill, who also is chairman of the Greater Phoenix Economic Council, is pushing the Legislature and Gov. Jan Brewer for the tax breaks.

Supporters say the breaks will attract solar investments and jobs to help the state's lagging economy.

Bidwell and the GPEC CEO Barry Broome have been touting the proposal to business leaders, state lawmakers and local cities.

They say there are billions of dollars in potential solar investments from foreign and U.S. energy firms and Arizona could lose out without some specialized help for the industry.

States including New Mexico, Texas and Oregon already have such incentives in place.

Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon and Arizona State University President Michael Crow also support the solar tax incentives.
