The Valley Metro is discriminating against the elderly and the handicapped. I agree with one person who said seniors should ride free. Any senior who rides the bus is most likely on a fixed income, they need the help of government. It is difficult for some seniors like Mr. Boggs who can hardly see to use one of the machines to get their ticket. Not only that you can’t get the tickets just anywhere which means he may have to take the bus to get to a location to purchase a ticket. Valley Metro wise up. I hope the old man puts you in your place.

Gee, where were you all when they announced the increase a few weeks ago?! I was coming out of my goard! I thought the fare increase was too high. I could see raising it just 25 or 50 cents but this double for a pass on board is ridiculous! The fare increase was too high, and they are giving free passes to students and certain groups, not to mention the 'honor' system on light rail which is also unfair. If it were lower and made it so most people had to pay something, they would make money. It's idiotic. Good for Mr. Boggs! I hope they'll be more protests to come! Stick that in your smike and poke it, Valley Metro!

All4justice,your comment was right on.When I read this story and the people on the bus complaining about their schedule,Rosa Parks came right to mind. This is ultimately government using an unholy influence to make us do what they want.Dont want to bring this dead horse up again but its a key example.Tobacco taxes. There are so many things that the government has no buisness doing, the much talked about ammo tax,the very real government induced price structure of full auto guns, they cant outlaw them so they find ways to make them accessible only to the rich. Its not about tobacco or guns or bus fare, its about how much influence the government has over our lives in a free country.Put a dead stop to this now everywhere it rears its ugly head or you will be sorry.TAKE IT BACK PEOPLE!

thats nice, raise the price of tickets for the taxpayers who paid for this scam.give em hell old man

I hope the people who support this elderly gentleman realise the airlines also have the same policy of charging extra for buying a ticket at the airport. If you think about it, we are slowly reducing our choices. The parking meters downtown were deliberatly raised, so people would be forced to take the bus or light rail, airlines increase ticket fares if you buy a ticket at the airport or if you use a paper ticket instead of e-ticket. Buses increase prices if you buy on the bus. This is supposed to be better for people, but is it really better?

Good for him. I think the pay hike was idiotic and I feel the same about the stupid light rail which I don't ride. Keep it at a fair rate because befor too long it will be easier and cheaper to drive your own car to work. And if you don't have a car the maybe a bike will be cheaper over all. I have never rode the city bus but if I had to I would be upset on the amount it cost.

WHat ever happened to convienence? A lot of us found it MORE convienent to get an all day pass on the bus rather than make an extra trip to a store to buy one at a cheaper rate. I only use valley metro twice a day to go to and from work. for me to pay 5.25 to get a pass on the bus rather than walk to a store ( which is half way from my apt to work) is IDIOTIC! it is cheaper for me to just pay a one way fare of 1.75 to work and then a one way fare of 1.75 to get home. ( total 3.50 v. 5.25). ALSO ( and this may sound discrimatory) If they are SOO WORRIED about keeping thier busses on time, why dont they do away with the wheelchair lifts? Those take up about 5 minutes of travel time ( sometime more if the chair operator does not know what they are doing) and take away three seats for every one wheelchair! ALL I know is that a couple of months ago, there was a hearing about raising the rates, the people spoke up and said NO but our voices were not heard! It seems our government has forgotten the three most IMPORTANT WORDS in our country. Those words are " WE THE PEOPLE!!!

I find it appalling that metro lines charge seniors full price just like everyone else, they deserve a break after all they are living off a fix income. Why is when our government agency freak up by spending money on some frivolous project we the tax payers have to pay for their foul ups.

Valley Metro is blind to the REAL picture and they don't give a damned. Many seniors and disabled CAN'T drive because of money or it might be dangerous for them and the public. We see it almost every week where some senior wrecked somewhere. Seniors ride the bus for safety for themselves and everyone else. And the handicapped can't afford a $40K specialy fitted vehicle for themselves. Metro should be ASHAMED, but they have no heart.

COUNTRYISCOOL - 7/3/2009 5:21 AM
This man was right to take a stand. The price should not increase if you are paying when you get on the bus! This man and all senior citizens should ride for free. They are unable to drive, possibly handicapped. They should have seats in the front designated for elderly, disabled ONLY.
