PHOENIX – Phoenix police released a sketch of the suspect who allegedly broke into an elderly woman’s home, assaulted her, and stole her car on Sunday.

According to Phoenix Police Officer Trent Crump, the suspect got into the home near Pecos Road and 24th Street through an unsecured window just after 12 a.m.

"That's a big mistake," said neighbor Nancy Boor.  "I'd never leave my windows open, expecially being on the first floor.  It's just not safe."

Crump said the suspect entered the 90-year-old victim's residence through the kitchen window and grabbed her from around the neck and forced her forward on the bed causing her to break her left clavicle.

He apparently told her if she stopped screaming he would release her.  After she complied he allegedly began going through her property.

He reportedly placed her in a separate room and closed the door, and continued ransacking the residence as he stole items of her property.

Crump said he stole her 1994 Lexus and fled the scene.  Her vehicle was found the following day in the parking lot of the condominiums just west of her complex, which is separated by a wall.

"I think she's a very brave senior," said Crump.  "It's unfortunate she had to go through this."

The suspect remains on the loose.

"Needless to say, this was a frightening event for her and would be for anyone else," said Crump.

"It's scary," added Boor.

The victim has been released from the hospital and is said to be doing OK.  She is recovering while staying with family members.

Phoenix police say when the weather gets nice, homeowners shouldn't let their guard down.  Crump says if you're going to open a window, it should be secured with a secondary locking device.

"When it gets cool, we can't let our guard down," said Crump.

The suspect is described as a Black male between 30 and 35 years old, 5 feet 2 inches to 5 feet 5 inches tall, 160 to 180 pounds, with a stocky build, light complexion, dark eyes, clean-shaven, and a pronounced Southern accent.

He last seen wearing a dark shirt, dark baggy pants, multi-colored bandada and gloves.

If you have any information about the crime, call Phoenix police at 602-262-6151.
