She said she and her 7-year-old daughter, Karly, were just two days away from getting evicted after falling behind on rent.
“I was looking to, probably, go down to the shelter,” said Morris.
Work slowed down at Morris’ old job and the paychecks stopped coming. But the overdue bills started piling up.
Morris said it was tough trying to keep her child happy and not let her "know the truth about what's going on and how bad it really is."
But Morris said things are better now. She became the first person in Phoenix to qualify for the
Homeless Prevention Rapid Re-Housing Program.
Arizona received $22 million from the federal government to run the program. Phoenix just started spending its portion.
The money can be used to help people pay for rent, utilities, and groceries.
To qualify, there is a list of requirements including income restrictions.
Applicants must have also received a delinquency or eviction notice and must have proof of a job or income.
