A free shuttle bus service from Tusayan to the popular South Rim of the Grand Canyon has been extended to the end of September.
The service, a pilot program that began in June, is meant to reduce traffic into the massive gorge by asking drivers to park in Tusayan and take shuttles to the park's visitor's center.
More than 62,000 people rode the shuttles as of Aug. 24, which officials say represents a reduction of more than 9,000 vehicles entering the park.
Service from Tusayan to the Grand Canyon will continue to run daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. through Sept. 28.
The shuttles are powered by natural gas.
