Two people are dead after a head-on wreck on U.S. 60 near Show Low Wednesday, according to an official with the Department of Public Safety.
DPS spokesman Harold Sanders said in a statement that the accident forced the highway to be closed in both directions.
The collision happened just after 10 a.m. Wednesday when the driver of a westbound vehicle lost control and went into the eastbound lanes.
Witnesses told authorities that other motorists tried to warn the driver of the Chevrolet S-10 pickup that the vehicle was traveling in the wrong lanes. The truck crashed into a Ford Explorer just outside the Show Low city limits.
Each vehicle had only one occupant, according to Sanders.
Traffic was routed onto city streets around the accident and the highway re-opened at 12:40 p.m.
According to Sanders, there is no additional information as what may have caused the loss of control by the driver of the S-10 or whether impairment was a factor in the collision.
