A juvenile in custody who allegedly broke free from officers and attempted to flee to his friend’s waiting vehicle east of Prescott was caught on Monday.

Yavapai County Sheriff's Office deputies were contacted at the Camp Verde Justice Facility by a Department of Public Safety officer after a 16-year-old reportedly tried to escape while exiting the court house.

Detention officers were escorting seven juveniles out of the court building around 4:45 p.m. when the teen broke free and ran towards a waiting white Chevrolet SUV, according to officials.

Detention officers were apparently able to tackle and restrain the teen before he entered the vehicle.

Officials said the vehicle left the area and was later found abandoned nearby with no sign of its driver.

A YCSO deputy recovered video surveillance photos of the incident and interviewed the boy about his escape attempt, according to the report.

He reportedly admitted that his friend, a 17-year-old, was the person driving the vehicle and that the two had planned the escape while both were in-custody.

Officials said the 17-year-old had been released earlier in the day and retuned as planned to provide a get away vehicle for Trammel.

While traveling on Beaver Creek Road in the Rimrock area where the 17-year-old was known to frequent, a YCSO sergeant saw a teenage male walking on the shoulder around 10:30 a.m.

This male apparently appeared to be of high school age, but was not in school.

When the deputy turned around to contact the male, he reportedly disappeared.

Additional deputies were called to the area and eventually located him hiding under a tree near a creek bed, according to the report.

Officials said he was identified as the 17-year-old and he was placed under arrest.

He allegedly admitted planning the escape attempt with the 16-year-old and had borrowed the vehicle from a friend.

The 17-year-old further explained that the plan was to get his friend and drive the vehicle to another location where they would switch cars before leaving the area, according to the report.

Based on the investigation, the 16-year-old received 3 new charges including Escape in the 1st Degree, Resisting Arrest, and Conspiracy to Commit Escape.

The 17-year-old, already on probation, was charged with Facilitation of Escape, Resisting Arrest and Conspiracy to Commit Escape. He was booked back into the Prescott Detention Center.
