PHOENIX -- It may not even be Halloween yet, but forest officials announced Tuesday that tags to cut down Christmas trees are almost sold out.

Tag sales started October 10 at 17 Big 5 Sporting Goods stores throughout the state, and of the 6,375 tags available there are only 2,689 left.

“Tags for four cutting-areas on the Apache-Sitgreaves, Coconino, Prescott and Tonto national forests are all but sold out,” Program Manager Candy Luhrsen says.

You are still able to buy tags in three cutting areas around Arizona. They include:

-         Cutting area 1: Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest Chevelon-Heber Ranger district. About 580 tags are available.

-         Cutting area 6: Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest Alpine and Springerville districts. About 1,782 tags are available.

-         Cutting area 3: Kaibab National Forest Tusayan Ranger district. About 440 tags are available.

Luhersen says tags are $15 each and trees can be cut starting November 21.

“It is strongly advised that you call ahead to your local Big 5 store to verify the availability of tags,” she said.

The Apache-Sitgreaves, Coconino and Prescott national forests are also selling tags over the counter and you can call the specific forest information centers directly for more details.
