GRANDVIEW POINT, AZ -- Officials with Grand Canyon National Park have started a prescribed fire as part of a project to treat 1,000 acres on the South Rim.

About 100 acres were burned on Saturday near Grandview Point, about nine miles southeast of Grand Canyon Village.

Park officials say part of the area burned earlier this year during the Ruby Fire on the Kaibab National Forest and the Game Reserve Fire within the national park.

Fire crews plan to continue with the project as long as weather conditions remain favorable.

Officials are warning park visitors and area residents that smoke is expected move to the northeast and will likely settle into the canyon at night.
