Border Patrol targets I-40 for undocumented immigrants

Reported by: Associated Press
Last Update: 9/03/2009 11:14 am
KINGMAN, AZ -- As they track illegal immigrants, U.S. Customs and Border agents are now targeting the Interstate 40 corridor between Needles, Calif., and Kingman.

During a three hour operation Wednesday, agents arrested 19 people, seized seven vehicles and even confiscated two chickens.

CBP Public Information Officer Laura Boston said smugglers have traditionally used Interstates 10 and 8, but are beginning to use alternate routes like I-40 as they attempt to bring illegal immigrants to Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

When agents are out looking for smugglers and their human cargo, they watch for suspicious behavior like irregular driving by suddenly exiting the freeway or changing lanes.

Other tip-offs are a vehicle with only one person but is heavily loaded down.
