KINGMAN, AZ -- UniSource Energy Services has agreed to buy the power from Mohave County's first wind power farm near Kingman.

Western Wind Energy Corp. plans to build a combined wind and solar energy project off Interstate 40 southwest of Kingman. The Canadian firm now has a deal to sell the power to UniSource, which is seeking renewable power to meet state requirements.

The wind plant would generate 11 megawatts of power, with 300 kilowatts coming from photo voltaic solar panels and the rest from wind turbines. The completed project is expected to generate enough power for about 2,300 homes.

The combined wind and solar project is believed to be the first in the country.

UniSource says it is seeking Arizona Corporation Commission approval for the 20-year contract. It provides power about 234,000 Arizona customers.
