Mohave County Animal Control has rescued five more dogs from an alleged puppy mill being operated in Golden Valley, west of Kingman.

On April 9, Mohave County Sheriff's Office, Animal Control and Environmental Health officials responded to another home in Golden Valley, which was allegedly operating a kennel without a permit.

Officials discovered five poodles that needed medical attention.  Animal Control took them to a local veterinarian for treatment.

The owner of the home, whose name has not been released, told deputies that some of the dogs at her home belonged to Karen Grogan, 57, one of the owners of K & S Puppy Ranch, which is being investigated for fraud.  The other business owner is Shirley Williams, 74.

The owner of the home investigated on April 9 was advised to comply with Environmental Health and Planning and Zoning laws in regards to operating the kennel.

She voluntarily surrendered some of her own dogs to authorities. However, the Mohave County Sheriff's Department has not stated how many, or what condition the dogs were in.

On March 26, deputies executed three search warrants at the K & S Puppy Ranch on Dessert View Trail, as well as two other homes in Golden Valley.

The investigation began after forged documents were discovered, according to Mohave County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Patricia Carter.

A dog was sold to a customer in California from the K & S Puppy Ranch in Golden Valley, and the dog became sick.

When the owner went to a vet in California with the certified health documents provided by K & S Puppy Ranch, that owner discovered a forgery.

The search warrant at Williams’ residence reportedly revealed 32 dogs and 5 puppies.

The search warrant at Grogan’s residence revealed 17 dogs, according to Carter.

Williams and Grogan were ordered to seek veterinarian services for a couple of dogs that needed medical attention, Carter said.

Both Williams and Grogan were charged with animal cruelty, no dog license (times the number of dogs) and a county ordinance for operating a kennel without a license, all misdemeanors.

Carter said K & S Puppy Ranch does have a valid operation permit, but Williams and Grogan don’t have permits to operate commercial kennels at their homes.

Mohave County Planning and Zoning and Mohave County Environmental Health will continue with their investigation with violations observed during the execution of the search warrant, according to Carter.

The fraudulent schemes investigation also continues with possible charges.
