FLAGSTAFF, AZ -- It was a rather chilly reception this week for students at Flagstaff High School after aging gas lines forced the shutdown of all central heating.

Many classrooms were without heat as temperatures Wednesday barely rose above freezing.

Students wore coats to stay warm and some teachers brought their own space heaters to make classrooms more comfortable.

Flagstaff Unified School District Assistant Superintendent of Operations Bob Kuhn said workers installed a new gas line at the school during renovations earlier this month.

Then inspectors decided the school's second gas line was also old enough that it should be replaced, leaving the building without either gas line operational for about two weeks.

Safety inspectors signed off on newly installed gas lines late Wednesday as the first snow flurries of the season blew into town.
