FLAGSTAFF, AZ -- This is no snow job. Flagstaff plans to deter would-be sledders by wrapping the eastside detention basin with a 6-foot high fence.

Plans for a Phoenix-based vendor to operate the snowplay area just north of State Route 89 and Country Club Drive interchange were dropped.

Instead, the city will fence off the area, increase police patrols and charge those caught in the detention basin with criminal trespassing.

Deputy Flagstaff City Manager Ben Fisk said the last-minute decision to close the basin to sledding means there will be no authorized snow play areas within the city limits this winter.

Flagstaff Police Department Lt. Ken Koch said the department will not arrest, jail or even ticket people for trespassing if it can be helped.
