FLAGSTAFF, AZ -- On campus alcohol violations are rising at Northern Arizona University.
Administrators at the Flagstaff school cite a growing freshman class as the main reason for the rise.
NAU Police Chief G.T. Fowler said alcohol violations rose by more than 200 in 2008 from 2007.
Fowler said the school takes immediate action and has a low tolerance approach to alcohol violations.
NAU's Residence Life Director Richard Payne said of the more than 1,000 alcohol violations handled by university administration, the university had less than a 20 percent recidivism rate of students getting caught on a subsequent alcohol violation in 2008.
Payne said with 3,600 freshman enrolled for the fall 2009 term, he expects the alcohol violation numbers to go up again.
