FLAGSTAFF, AZ -- Flagstaff's fire and police departments are expected to split roughly $330,000 in Homeland Security grants this fall.
Some of the cash will be spent on "enhanced multi-hit ballistic plates." The large metal plates slip into bulletproof vests that specifically protect the chest area from rifle bullets.
Deputy Flagstaff Police Chief Kevin Treadway said the plates will be primarily used by the city's SWAT Team and will cost $18,000.
The police department also got funding for a portable surveillance system and funding for improved regional communications.
The fire department got Homeland Security grants for detecting weapons of mass destruction, radiological monitoring and chemical identification.
