SCOTTSDALE, AZ --
Tranquility Trail Animal Sanctuary specializes in bunnies, but says it wants to expand to help horses, dogs and cats.
The Sanctuary has the land, but now says it needs $200,000 to care for Arizona's growing unwanted pet population.
The Sanctuary started as a store called The Bunny Basics, selling supplies for small animals.
"People started coming to us with their rabbits because all the other shelters were full so we just saw there was such a need," said Kelly Ames.
Ames said there was a need for a new philosophy with unwanted or behaviorally problematic pets.
"It's unfortunately caused by humans," said Ames.
That's why she said they picked bright colors for the walls and tranquil music to help calm the pets and the people wanting to adopt or volunteer with them.
Most of the bunnies were rescued from being euthanized at other shelters, the rest come from far worse circumstances.
"We currently have five in there right now that were rescued from a hoarding situation in New Mexico - over 300 in someone's backyard."
Right now, Tranquility Trail has aquired two acres of land to build a larger facility for the rabbits, but they need $200,000 to complete the phase.
Capital would still be needed for phases two and three, to include new land and buildings to care for horses, dogs and cats.
