SCOTTSDALE, AZ -- Officials believe alcohol was a factor in an early morning crash that sent one person to the hospital Sunday.

Scottsdale police are investigating a two vehicle collision that happened at about 6:20 a.m. at the intersection of Scottsdale and Camelback roads.

Officials said the intersection was closed Sunday morning as crews worked to clear the area.

The two vehicles involved were a blue Chevrolet and a black Mercedes.

According to Scottsdale police, the driver of a Blue Chevy Cavalier was southbound on Scottsdale Road when he struck a Black Mercedes which was stopped at the red light at Camelback Road.

The Chevy reportedly continued into the traffic pole on the southwest corner of the intersection where it ultimately came to rest.

The driver of the Chevy was transported to SMH-Osborn in Serious Condition. Alcohol and speed both appear to be factors for the driver of the Chevy, according to police. He will face DUI related charges pending his release from the hospital.

The four occupants of the Mercedes were uninjured, officials said.

Officials said multiple roads near the intersection remained closed early Sunday. They included westbound Camelback Road at 73rd Street, eastbound Camelback Road at Marshall Way, northbound Scottsdale Road at Shoeman Lane and southbound Scottsdale at Fashion Square Mall.
