SCOTTSDALE, AZ -- On Tuesday, Private First Class Donald Hossack and Lance Corporal Lester Calhoun were awarded the Silver Star for their actions during battle over 42 years ago.
The battle took place on April 30, 1967 at Hill 881 in Vietnam.
Hossack and Calhoun's unit advanced to secure the hill and were met with a much larger force.
The unit took heavy casualties, including the Platoon Leader.
Calhoun and Hossack continued the fight despite being injured themselves, with Hossack taking over the radio and coordinating the air strikes.
Thier actions are said to be responsible for saving the lives of the rest of the platoon.
"It is somewhat bittersweet, at the same time I am very glad and very proud to be a recipient," said Hossack.
The Silver Star is the third highest honor given out by the military.
November 10, is also the birthday of the Marine Corps.
They were founded 234 years ago.
