Paradise Valley mayor explores run for Arizona governor

Reported by: Associated Press
Last Update: 9/23 7:06 am
PARADISE VALLEY, AZ -- Paradise Valley Mayor Vernon Parker has created an exploratory committee for his possible entry in the race for the Republican nomination for governor.

Jason Rose, a publicist for Parker, said Parker authorized the filing made Tuesday with the Secretary of State's Office.

Rose said Parker was expected to make "a major announcement regarding the 2010 governor's race" during a planned address to a Republican gathering Wednesday evening.

Republican Gov. Jan Brewer has said she is leaning toward running for a full term.

Brewer was elevated into the governor's office by the January resignation of Democrat Janet Napolitano.

Brewer's call for a temporary sales tax increase to help balance the state budget has drawn criticism from many fellow Republicans.
