CAVE CREEK, AZ -- Two city council candidates 'cut cards' late Monday to see who would take over a seat on the town council.
After the game, the results dictated the election's winner. Candidate Adam Trenk defeated former Councilman Thomas McGuire to become than next Cave Creek councilman.
Both tied in a May election, forcing an old state law to step in. It requires the winner be chosen by a
game of chance after a tie.
Maricopa County Superior Court Judge John Buttrick ordered the election to be decided by a draw of cards.
The candidate drawing the highest card would then be declared the winner.
Trenk drew a King of Hearts during the Monday evening game.
McGuide drew a 6 of Hearts. Thus, Adam Trenk won the draw and was declared winner.
Trenk is expected to be sworn in before a council meeting later Monday night.
"The voters have spoken and it came out in a way that had to be decided somehow, so how more Arizona than a draw of the cards," said candidate Thomas McGuire.
"I'd be lying if I was to tell you I wasn't a little disappointed that it's going to come down to drawing cards," said candidate Adam Trenk.
Trenk was three votes shy of locking in the town council seat in the March primary election.
"Rather than doing 30 paces, turn around and shoot someone, the way we do it today is a little bit more civilized but it's still got that wonderful western flavor," said McGuire.
