Check for traffic delays and detours

NEW RIVER, AZ – On Sunday, DPS released the names of the two people killed and the one person injured in a single vehicle accident that happened on Interstate 17, north of the Valley Saturday.

A DPS officer told ABC15 News that the names of the deceased are Luz Macias, 46, and Lizeth Rios, 14.  Angelique Rios, 11, was injured.  All three victims were from Phoenix.

At about 1:45 p.m., Macias was driving her 2004 Dodge pickup truck, which was carrying a load of tires, when she lost control and struck a guardrail at milepost 239.2, between New River and Black Canyon City, according to DPS.

The truck rolled and caused Macias and Lizbeth Rios to be ejected from the truck.  They ended up in a wash area, about 40 to 50 feet from the road, according to an officer at the scene.

DPS said Angelique Rios was transported to a Valley hospital with relatively minor injuries.

Seatbelts were not in use, according to investigators.

The crash might have been the result of a tire on the truck blowing out, causing it to go out of control, according to the officer at the scene.

DPS shut down the roadway for several hours, which caused a traffic backup for several miles for people heading north on the I-17, but it was reopened at about 6 p.m. Saturday.
