Phoenix firefighters and DPS officers are on the scene of an accident that claimed the lives of an elderly man and woman and injured a third person Wednesday.
The single-vehicle accident happened at about 3:15 p.m. on the southbound I-17, about one mile south of the New River Road exit, north of Anthem.
According to a dispatch operator for the Phoenix Fire Department, the vehicle rolled over.
An elderly man was killed. His wife was airlifted to John C. Lincoln Hospital where she later died from her injuries.
A third person suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported to John C. Lincoln Hospital by ground.
Crews have opened one lane at the scene of the accident on the southbound I-17, so expect delays.
DPS said one lane is expected to remain closed for several hours as officers investigate what happened.
The identities of the people involved have not been released and no other details were made available Wednesday evening.
