Potential downside to new iPhones

Apple's new 3G model iPhones are suppose to be faster and without many of the glitches of the original phone.
But it seems the new phone still has a downfall that can be very expensive to fix.

Dave Gregory loves the iPhone so much he bought them for his entire family.
But he says as soon as his teenage daughters started using their phones the unthinkable happened: they both dropped them!

"Within two weeks, both of them had dropped their phone, simple drops, fumbling to get a call. It fell one floor a couple of feet," says Dave.

The phones survived. The glass screens? Not so lucky. The screens shattered.

Dave says he immediately contacted Apple but learned the one thing not covered by Apple's warranty: breakage.

Instead he says he had to pay $199 per phone for Apple to replace the screen, the price he paid per phone!

Dave says, "so I paid the equivalent of what the phone cost, in the first 30 days, twice!"

A check of apples website turned up this:
"Glass cracked due to misuse or abuse is not covered under warranty!"

Go online and you'll find hundreds of complaints.

But several websites now give instructions for changing the glass yourself, for as little as five dollars!

But there's a catch: opening the phone voids your warranty.

I don't think it's worth the risk, I'd say you're better off buying a case for your phone.

It doesn't guarantee that your glass won't break, but gives you some protection.
Voiding your warranty however throws your protection away and can mean spending more in the long run.
