Hurting for holiday cash? The state, IRS could owe you cash

PHOENIX -- With the holidays closing in, here are a couple of easy ways that may put money back in your pocket.

First, check with the IRS.

They have more than $3 million waiting for 3,000 Arizonans.

If you or a relative moved and did not receive a refund, your money may be waiting for you.

But keep in mind, you will have to provide a Social Security number and refund amount you were due.

And remember, the IRS never initiates e-mails, so don't fall for scams.

The state may also have money waiting for you.

Their Web site even asks, "Do we have your money?"

It may be funds that have been forgotten, lost, or money you never knew you had, like old or forgotten bank accounts or even property left to you by someone else.

The state says in the past year, it has given back $22 million worth of property to owners.

And they say they've taken in another 342,000 items.

But again, be prepared to prove you are the owner by providing a Social Security number and photo indentification.

You can search for your IRS refund online.

And don't forget to check for unclaimed Arizona property you may not even know you had.
