Housing rental ad could lead to losing thousands of dollars

There's a rental scam going on that has been sucking in people for years and it's still around.

Here's how it works.
The scammer is usually someone who says he had to leave the country for work and needs to rent his place fast.
Sometimes you're given the address and can look at the outside of the building.
In most of these scams, the person says he'll send you keys to take a look inside.
But that's after you wire him money to show you're interested.

I hope you know what comes next.
You show up on the move-in date and the place is not for rent and your money is gone.

Yes, the FBI says people actually fall for this.

All of the usual warnings apply here.

Don't deal with anybody except a local landlord who you can meet.

Don't wire money, especially if you haven't even seen the inside of the place.

And if there's written correspondence, look for misspelled words.
It's a giveaway that the person may be from a foreign country.
