The United States Food and Drug Administration wants to pull more than 25 different weight loss pills off the market.
The FDA says some of the pills contain, "a solution used in chemical experiments and a suspected cancer causing agent." The press release goes on to state other pills, "contain drugs that are not approved for marketing in the United States."
According to the FDA several of these ingredients are not being disclosed to consumers.
The FDA says the products are being marketed and promoted on websites and in some cases being sold at retail stores across the country.
“These tainted weight loss products pose a great risk to public health because they contain undeclared ingredients and, in some cases, contain prescription drugs in amounts that greatly exceed their maximum recommended dosages,” said Janet Woodcock, M.D., director, Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, FDA.
The FDA is urging consumers who have consumed these products, "to stop taking them and consult their healthcare professional immediately." A list of the products is posted below.
The FDA says these products are "illegal" and recommends consumers talk to a healthcare professional before consuming any weight loss products.
Right now the FDA is only seeking a recall of the 25 products, but says it, "may take additional enforcement steps, such as issuing warning letters or initiating seizures, injunctions, or criminal charges."
