GLENDALE, AZ -- Some Valley businesses are showcasing new ways to go green.
Jobing.com Arena now has 8 “reverse vending machines”.
The idea is instead of inserting money to buy something, you insert a recyclable product for a chance to win a prize.
Megan Curdy, marketing and publicity manager for Jobing.com Arena in Glendale, said, “It’s like a lottery, everyone has a chance of winning.”
It doesn’t print a ticket for a prize every time, just some of the time.
“We have a couple discounts for merchandise as well as concessions and tickets to future games,” she added that the goal is to make recycling fun, “really encouraging people to think twice about what they are doing before they throw something away.”
Curdy also explained how the reverse vending machines are part of the
Coyotes go green initiative.
They are aiming to reduce the amount of paper they use in the office.
In the bathrooms they have added
SRP placards above all the sinks which give fans information about water conservation.
Over at
Tempe Marketplace, the Vice President of Marketing for
Vestar Development Co. explained how they have added a solar powered trash compactor.
Denise Neff said they put it near the stage at The District because, “this is actually one of the busiest areas of Tempe's Marketplace so its' a great place to make it visible.”
Carrie Galvan, area director of recycling operations for
Waste Management, explained how powered by the sun it compacts trash through out the day, “it's about the size of a 35 gallon trash receptacle however it holds about 5-times that size. It actually reduces the amount of times someone has to come to pick up the trash.”
She also said, “They actually will emit a signal telling us when a can is full.”
Galvan said the solar powered trash compactor is web-powered and so you can go to a website to, “see all of the cans that you have in the area and if it’s flashing a red signal that means its full, a green means its good to go.”
Of the new gadget Karyn Bucher and Leilani Strassner said, “I've never seen anything like it, oh my gosh how cool, that is so strange, it's wonderful!”
Bucher added, “I think it's wonderful because we really need to go green. Anything that will help the amount of trash go down is great. I look forward to seeing more of them around.”
