PHOENIX -- Valley resident Regina Lucy has wanted to update her home’s look for years, but due to her daughter’s asthma and her allergy to latex, a fresh paint job wasn’t an option.

Many of the chemicals, or volatile organic compounds (VOCs), found in regular household paints also made her worry about long term effects to her and her family’s health.

Studies suggest that VOCs coming from your typical household paint can lead to diseases like childhood leukemia.  (Click here for more information on this study.)

But one Valley businessman has a solution.

Ted Sosnicki recently purchased the license to a truly “green”, non-allergenic paint created by University of Arizona professor Meredith Aronson.

Sosnicki says it’s the only paint in the United States that contains absolutely no VOCs, making it good for the environment since it won’t release any carbon into the atmosphere.

“One of the biggest pollutants in the entire world is paints,” Sosnicki said. “Paints put off more carbon in the air and in the environment than all the cars put together.”

To make matters worse, adding color to paint increases the amount of VOCs.

But, that’s not the case with Sosnicki’s “Green Planet Paints” which are made with natural minerals.

So, Regina Lucy decided to give them a try.

"I didn’t get a headache. I didn’t become dizzy or overwhelmed. I wasn’t scratching my arm off because the paint got on my arm...," Lucy said.

Now, Lucy is painting her house using “Green Planet Paints” without any negative side effects.

It does come at a price, though, selling for nearly fifty dollars a gallon.

“Finances are tight,” Lucy said. “But I’m willing to pay that extra amount for the health of my daughter.”

Lucy also raved about the quality of the product.

“It’s rich looking … sometimes it’s like, ‘Is this real’?” she said. “You just wanna go up and touch it … and it cleans up great!”
