TEMPE, AZ -- An upcoming, international "green" expo will feature the work of high school students, competing to develop an environmentally-friendly dog house made of recycled materials.

According to an Arizona State University press release, more than eighty students from ten different high schools are competing to become "top dog" when they reveal their creations at the Desert Doghouse Competition on October 24.

The winning team will feature its creation at the U.S. Green Building council's Greenbuild International Conference and Expo Nov. 11-13.

More than 30,000 people from around the world are expected to attend the expo.

"This offers students in our community a rare opportunity to participate in the world's largest expo highlighting innovative engineering, design and entrepreneurial ventures aimed at protecting and improving our environment," said Deirdre Meldrum, dean of ASU's Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering, in a press release.

Schools from Gilbert, Mesa, Goodyear, Tempe, Phoenix, Peoria, Tucson, Scottsdale, and Payson will participate.

According to the ASU press release, judges from professional construction, engineering and design companies will select the best dog house.

The dog houses will be auctioned off during block parties in Tempe and Scottsdale, and the proceeds will help benefit the construction of a sustainable home in Phoenix by Habitat for Humanity.
