AVONDALE, AZ -- The Avondale Neighborhood and Family Services Department launched its annual ‘Back Pack Program’ on Monday and is currently accepting various school supplies to be donated to local children.

“No child should go back to school without basic school supplies,” said Christina Avila, Community Outreach Coordinator with Avondale.

Every year, the City of Avondale fills donated backpacks with school supplies to help children whose families can’t afford to spend money on supplies that many schools don’t provide to students.

“Last year we served 250 youth in need,” Avila said. “This year, we have more children in need of services than ever before. We are asking the community to help us reach our goal of assisting 300 youth that attend schools in Avondale, Goodyear and Litchfield Park with supplies they need to begin a successful school year.”

Items that are being requested to fill the 300 backpacks that the city received as a donation from Care1st Health Plan Arizona include: spiral notebooks, crayons (box of 24), markers (box of 12), colored pencils (box of 12), #2 pencils, wooden rulers, 4 oz glue sticks and red rubber erasers.

Donations are being collected during business hours at Avondale City Hall, located at 11465 West Civic Center Drive near Van Buren Street and 115th Boulevard, and the Avondale Community Center, located at 1007 South 3rd Street near Lower Buckeye Road and Central Avenue.

The school supply drive will end on Wednesday.
