Amid layoffs, Tucson district recruited teachers elsewhere

The V.P. of the Pima Association of Taxpayers said, in part, "... it's a waste of public money to recruit teachers when there's a glut of teachers on the market."

Snip "...District officials said the recruiting effort launched at an unfortunate time..." Hey officials? Earth to Officials..?? Are you awake and able to make rational decisions? This gets the AZ "No Brainer" Award of the week ! The only thing missing is some chance that you recruited ILLEGAL grads in your mis-placed venture. You have just 'verified' that your own system fails to prepare minority students to a sufficient level where they can teach within your District. You might be Ivory Tower educators, but you sure miss the boat on plain ole common sense. Please send this article to ALL your U of A grads! Bet they would love to see how much YOU value the education they got at your local University ! Nice work - you dolts !

Why do Black children have to have Black teachers? It should not be a color issue, but one of professionalism, and reaching the students. It's almost sounds like someone doesn't think a white or Latino teacher can teach a Black child. I understand the role model concerns, but this is ridiculous. No wonder things are such a mess. What knuckle head thought up this crock of bologna ?

WOW!!!! Some question, heck everyone should question this smooth move. You mean to tell me, there aren't 15 highly qualified minority teachers in our state, that needed jobs or none among the 600 they let go? TUSD must have funds set aside for recruiting purposes, of course it's under the guise of federal requirements for minorities on staff. Don't Latinos count as a minority, there are plenty who have teaching degrees in Tuscon, and I'd dare to say you'd find some in the 600 you let go. Doesn't U of A offer a degree in Education? I hope everyone had a nice vacation back east, and down south on the taxpayers' $$ while in search of these 15 minority teachers. It's stupidity like this, that makes it hard to swallow school bond issues, and feel the need to support house bills and budgets concerns in education. It's even more scary that these folks are in charge of educating our children. Way to go TUSD! You take the Booby Award on this one!

This would be a case in point for my assertion that we need to simply do away with the public school system as we know it.They cant do the right thing if they try, which they dont.Level the whole thing or start dragging administration through the steets to public hangings as a warning to the rest. They keep crying for more money and idiots keep giving it to them and the teachers never see it.
