YUMA, AZ – Detectives from the Yuma Police Department arrested a suspect on Tuesday in connection with multiple burglaries and car thefts in the area.

Michael McCormick was arrested around 4 p.m. at the Yuma Home Park after an almost ten-hour-long standoff with police.

The YPD’s Special Enforcement Team and Hostage Negotiation Team located McCormick around 7 a.m. in a room at the Torchlite Lodge at 2501 South 4th Avenue, officials say.

McCormick was reportedly armed at the time and also had a female acquaintance with him in his room. The entire lodge was evacuated and surrounding streets and businesses were closed or restricted from access.

According to authorities, McCormick was contacted by the police via phone but was uncooperative.

Once the Special Enforcement Team attempted to detain McCormick, the suspect reportedly broke through the lodge roof and fled towards the Yuma Home Park.

The female acquaintance remained in the room and was contacted by authorities, officials say. She was treated for minor injuries and chemical exposure.

McCormick broke into a trailer home at the Yuma Home Park and continued to be uncooperative with police until he finally surrendered and was taken into custody, according to authorities.

McCormick was transported to the Yuma Regional Medical Center where he was treated for minor injuries and chemical exposure.

Once treated, McCormick will be reportedly transferred to the Yuma Police Department for the rest of the investigation.

The involvement of the female acquaintance in relation to this incident is still under investigation, authorities say.
