Tucson police: Man dies after struggle with officers

TUCSON, AZ -- Tucson police say they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the in-custody death of a 31-year-old man with fought with officers early Wednesday.
 
Officers responded to a Tucson home for a domestic violence call around 12:21 a.m. Upon arrival, police say they established probable cause to arrest Shon W. Garrett for physically assaulting his live-in girlfriend.
 
Police say Garrett brandished a kitchen knife while resisting arrest and fought with officers who utilized pepper spray, closed fist strikes and their batons to disarm him and place him in custody.
 
Officers summoned Tucson Fire Department paramedics who checked Garrett and cleared him for transport to jail.
 
Police say a short time later, Garrett became unresponsive and officers began administering CPR.
 
Garrett was transported by paramedics to St. Joseph's Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
