TUCSON, AZ -- It's up to Gov. Jan Brewer to decide if Tucson city elections will become nonpartisan.
The Legislature sent the governor a bill Wednesday that would also end Tucson's practice of electing council members who represent specific districts, or wards.
Democrats argued the move should not be made at the state level while Republicans generally supported the change.
Rep. Nancy Young Wright, D-Oro Valley, said the change might lower voter turnout.
Others pointed out that Tucsonans have previously rejected the change themselves.
Tucson voters last voted down the switch to nonpartisan elections in 1992.
