TUCSON, AZ -- A former University of Arizona football player was acquitted Monday of sexually assaulting a fellow student last year.
Johnathan Turner was accused of raping a then-18-year-old woman at a home on Tucson's northwest side in April 2008.
A Pima County prosecutor told jurors during closing arguments Friday that Turner was guilty because the woman was asleep and/or impaired by alcohol and unable to give consent. Turner claims the sex was consensual.
The former Wildcats defensive lineman was suspended from the team within days of the alleged incident and suspended from school in April. His appeal is pending.
